Imphal : The conflict-ridden state of Manipur, which has been grappling with intense violence since May 2023, is finally set to receive a visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After months of criticism from opposition parties regarding his absence, sources indicate that the Prime Minister will likely travel to the northeastern state in mid-September. While the exact dates are not yet finalized, a visit is anticipated around September 13th or 14th.
The ongoing ethnic clashes have devastated the region, leading to the tragic loss of over 250 lives and displacing nearly 60,000 people. Despite the widespread destruction, the situation remains far from normal. Modi's long-awaited visit comes after an extended period where, despite his travels both domestically and abroad, he had not been able to make time for the violence-hit state. This absence has been a major point of contention for political opponents, who have repeatedly questioned the government's handling of the crisis.
Speculation about the Prime Minister's trip has been building over the past few days, fueled by a government document from Manipur's General Administration Department. The document mentioned the upcoming arrival of a "VVIP" in September and called for preparations to give them a "royal welcome." This VVIP is widely believed to be Modi. According to reports, the Prime Minister is expected to hold public meetings at Kangla in Imphal and at the Peace Ground in Churachandpur.
While government officials have remained tight-lipped about the potential visit, a ruling BJP MLA has reportedly confirmed the news to the media, stating, "The Prime Minister's news is almost confirmed." This visit could mark a significant turning point in the state's efforts to restore peace and stability.
