Guwahati : In a decisive move following a landslide victory, the Assam Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has officially approved the draft bill for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). This landmark decision was taken during the very first cabinet meeting after the new government took its oath of office, signaling a swift fulfillment of the BJP's electoral promises.

Fulfilling the 'Sankalp Patra' Promises

The implementation of UCC in Assam was a cornerstone of the BJP’s manifesto. By clearing this draft, the government aims to bring significant social changes.

"The Uniform Civil Code will effectively end polygamy and bring regulations to live-in relationships. It ensures that every marriage and divorce is legally registered, securing the inheritance rights of women," stated CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Protecting Indigenous Traditions

While states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat have already moved towards UCC, Assam’s version is tailored to its unique social fabric. Recognizing the diversity of the state, the Assam government has exempted tribal communities in both the hills and plains from the purview of this code.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the traditions and customs of the indigenous people will remain untouched. The bill is expected to be tabled in the State Assembly later this month for final approval.

A Vision for Progress

Beyond social reforms, the administration is also focusing on its promise of providing 2 lakh government jobs within five years. The rapid move on UCC implementation sends a strong message of accountability to the voters of Assam.

By integrating women's empowerment and legal protection for all ethnic groups, the Assam BJP government is setting a new precedent for governance in Northeast India.
