BARKHOLA, CACHAR — The onset of the monsoon season has triggered catastrophic riverbank erosion across multiple areas within the Barkhola assembly constituency of Cachar district. The situation is particularly grim near the Barkhola Old Market area, where the fierce currents of the Jatinga River have left numerous families living in absolute terror.
Known locally as the "Mad River," the Jatinga strikes fear into the hearts of residents, earned by its reputation for swallowing entire homes within a matter of seconds.
Speaking to the media, Gautam Dhar Choudhury, the General Secretary of the Barkhola Matribhumi Club, alongside several locals, painted a harrowing picture of the unfolding crisis. As the relentless erosion eats away at the riverbanks, homesteads are teetering on the edge of collapse. Residents fear that multiple houses could be swallowed by the surging waters at any given moment.
Administrative Neglect Sparks Outrage
Locals have expressed deep resentment over administrative inaction, alleging that despite years of repeated appeals for permanent flood and erosion control measures, the authorities have failed to implement a viable solution. Consequently, the arrival of the monsoon has once again plunged the entire region into a familiar cycle of panic.
Currently, many families are forced to stay awake through the night, guarding their properties in shifts. Caught in a grim battle against time and nature, they remain terrified of when the voracious currents will claim their livelihoods.
Affected residents have issued an urgent plea for immediate government intervention, demanding swift, effective, and permanent anti-erosion measures before the Jatinga River washes their community off the map.
