firhad-hakim-resigns-kolkata-mayor-trinamool-political-crisis

Kolkata : In a significant political development, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim has stepped down from his post, submitting his resignation to Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday. The resignation comes amid ongoing political turbulence within the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and discussions surrounding the emergence of an “original Trinamool” faction.

According to party sources, Hakim had repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction over not being able to function effectively as mayor despite holding the office. He reportedly claimed that key administrative responsibilities were being handled through the Municipal Commissioner, limiting his role in civic governance.

Speculation over his future intensified after the resignation of Mayor-in-Council member Tarak Singh earlier this week. Hakim's remarks that “the team would act together” further fueled discussions about possible changes within the civic administration.

On Wednesday, while a group of legislators associated with the emerging faction held discussions at the Assembly, Hakim met Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence and formally expressed his desire to step down. Although Banerjee initially urged him to reconsider, she eventually accepted his resignation.

Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated that Hakim chose to resign with dignity as he was allegedly not being allowed to function fully as mayor.

Following his resignation, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is expected to be administered temporarily by the Municipal Commissioner. The state government may appoint an administrator if necessary. Municipal elections are scheduled for December, although political observers believe the timeline could change given the evolving situation.
