Silchar: The Rabindra Central Library at Assam University, Silchar, commemorated ‘National Librarians’ Day 2025’ with a vibrant celebration on 12 August, honoring the legacy of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. The event brought together university dignitaries, library professionals, faculty, and staff to reaffirm the indispensable role of libraries in academia and society.
Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Assam University Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant reminisced about his student days, emphasizing libraries as irreplaceable sanctuaries of authentic knowledge, even in the internet era.
Earlier in her welcome address, Dr. Sumana Chakrabarty Sarmah, Librarian In-Charge, highlighted the pioneering contributions and the enduring relevance of Dr. Ranganathan’s principles in today’s digital age.
Dr. Amit Uraon, Senior Assistant Librarian, elaborated on Dr. Ranganathan’s ‘Five Laws of Library Science’ while Dr. Pulak Dhar, Assistant Registrar, advocated for reading as the foundation of an enlightened society. Dr. Pinak Kanti Roy and Dr. Niloy Kumar Paul also spoke on the occasion. Mr. Saroj Kumar Mandal delivered the vote of thanks.
