Hailakandi observes 19 May Language Martyrs Day with a colorful rally and tributes to the 11 brave hearts of Barak Valley's 1961 movement.
HAILAKANDI : The historic and solemn occasion of 19 May was observed across Barak Valley with profound reverence, marking the anniversary of the supreme sacrifice made by eleven language martyrs in 1961. In Hailakandi district, citizens gathered in large numbers to honour the brave hearts who laid down their lives at Silchar railway station to protect the dignity of the Bengali language.
Colourful Procession and Tableaux Mark the Day
To commemorate Barak Valley Language Martyrs Day, a grand cultural procession was jointly organised by the Hailakandi branch of Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan and the Hailakandi Municipal Board. The rally commenced from the local Bhasha Shahid Smarak Sthal, traversing key routes of the town. Cultural activists, teachers, students, and prominent citizens participated spontaneously, reflecting the deep emotional chord the day strikes in the region.
A major highlight of the rally was the display of beautifully crafted tableaux by various schools and local organisations. These tableaux vividly depicted the intense struggles of the 1961 Bengali language movement, leaving onlookers deeply moved. Residents lined the streets to witness the march and offer their silent respect.
MLA Dr Milon Das Urges Youth to Remember History
Following the procession, dignitaries, political representatives, and various socio-cultural organisations offered floral tributes at the martyr’s memorial. Speaking on the occasion, Hailakandi MLA Dr Milon Das emphasized the need to pass on this golden legacy to the younger generation.
"The supreme sacrifice of the eleven language martyrs is permanently etched in the history of Barak Valley. Our youth must remain rooted to the ideals of the 1961 movement," MLA Dr Milon Das stated.
The day concluded with a seminar discussing the historical significance of the movement, ensuring that the flame of remembrance continues to inspire Hailakandi news and cultural discourse for years to come.
