MUMBAI: In a significant development for one of Bollywood's most anticipated projects, actress Deepika Padukone has decided to step away from her acting role in the Hindi remake of the hit Hollywood film, 'The Intern.' While she was originally slated to star opposite the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, Padukone will now focus exclusively on producing the film under her banner, Ka Productions.
The project, which has been in the works since 2020, has seen a number of challenges and delays. The original Hollywood film featured stellar performances by Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, and Deepika's company had acquired the rights to the remake with high hopes. Initially, the role now played by Amitabh Bachchan was to be essayed by the late Rishi Kapoor, but his untimely demise led to the project being shelved temporarily. Amitabh Bachchan was later brought on board, but the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic further postponed the shooting schedules.
Now, after a hiatus of five years, the makers are keen to revive the project. However, this time, Deepika's creative involvement will be limited to her role as a producer. Her decision to concentrate on the behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking highlights a growing trend among leading actors to take on more creative control.
This move leaves a major void in the film's cast, and the search for a new actress to fill Deepika's shoes is now underway. The announcement has sparked considerable speculation among fans and industry insiders about who will be cast in the lead role, promising an exciting new chapter for the much-awaited remake.
