Indian Railways Job Frenzy: Over 1.87 Crore Apply for 64,000 Posts, Highlighting Intense Competition for Government Vacancies
NEW DELHI: The dream of a stable government job in India has never been more competitive, a fact underscored by a staggering statistic recently revealed by the Ministry of Railways. According to data presented in Parliament, the Indian Railways received an astonishing 1.87 crore (18.7 million) applications for just 64,197 posts in 2024, revealing the immense demand and intense rivalry for these coveted positions.
The information was disclosed during a parliamentary session in response to questions about the current number of vacancies and future recruitment plans within the railway network. The sheer volume of applications highlights the formidable challenge faced by job seekers across the country.
Why the Growing Demand?
The pressure on the Indian Railways' recruitment process has been escalating over the past few years due to multiple factors. A large number of employees are reaching retirement age, creating a consistent outflow of personnel. Concurrently, the railway network is undergoing massive expansion, with a growing number of trains and the implementation of modern security systems, electrification, and digitalization. These advancements have created new roles that did not exist before, significantly increasing the total number of vacancies.
Against this backdrop, the picture of fierce competition becomes even clearer. The Ministry announced that the recruitment process is currently underway for over 100,000 vacancies. Of these, advertisements for 92,116 posts, including Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician, RPF personnel, Junior Engineer, Paramedical staff, and NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories), were released in 2024.
The competition for these roles is unprecedented, as evidenced by the following figures:
RPF Constable: For this position alone, over 4.5 million applications were received, meaning a staggering 1,076 candidates are vying for each single post.
NTPC (Graduate): The competition for these graduate-level positions is also intense, with 720 applicants fighting for every one vacancy.
Technician Posts: Even for technical roles, the competition is substantial, with 189 applications submitted for each available post.
The Ministry of Railways also highlighted a positive trend in hiring over the last decade. A comparison of recruitment statistics shows that 4.11 lakh (411,000) employees were hired between 2004 and 2014. This number increased to 5.08 lakh (508,000) between 2014 and 2025, indicating a significant rise in the number of individuals being absorbed into the railway workforce.
