New Delhi, August 10: In a significant diplomatic move, India has officially welcomed the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Scheduled for August 15 in Alaska, the high-stakes summit comes amidst a backdrop of escalating trade tensions and complex geopolitical maneuvering, placing India's statement in a particularly important light.
A formal statement from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that New Delhi "welcomes the understanding reached by the United States and Russia for the meeting on August 15." The statement further expressed India's hope that the summit could pave the way for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the establishment of peace. This sentiment was underscored by a direct reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's earlier assertion that "this is not an era of war." The timing of this statement is highly significant, as it coincides with India’s efforts to strengthen its ties with Russia, even as its relationship with the U.S. faces diplomatic strain.
The U.S. administration, under President Trump, has expressed discontent with India's continued energy purchases and arms deals with Moscow. Trump has specifically voiced his displeasure over these economic ties, even threatening to impose a 50% tariff increase on Indian goods. The U.S. President has also reportedly warned of halting all trade discussions with India, claiming that India's business with Russia is directly funding Russia's war effort in Ukraine.

Despite these threats, India has consistently made it clear that it will not compromise on its national interests. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has stated unequivocally that India is a much stronger nation now and will not bow to external pressure. This strong stance has been reinforced by recent diplomatic engagements. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently had a phone conversation with President Putin, whom he referred to as a "friend" on social media. During the call, both leaders reportedly emphasized their shared commitment to strengthening the India-Russia relationship, enhancing their strategic partnership, and discussed the latest developments in the Ukraine situation.
Further signaling its resolve, India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval recently traveled to Russia amid the diplomatic friction with the U.S. During his visit last Friday, Doval held a meeting with President Putin and subsequently met with Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister, Denis Manturov. Their discussions reportedly covered a wide range of topics, including bilateral cooperation on military technology.
Analysts believe Doval's visit and the discussions held served to reinforce India's independent foreign policy stance, particularly in the face of Trump’s threats. While specific details of the meetings were not publicly disclosed, a brief statement from the Russian side confirmed that discussions with Manturov centered on bilateral cooperation in military technology, as well as strategic sectors like civil aviation, metallurgy, and the chemical industry.
