New Delhi: In a major boost for the Indian cricket team, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is expected to make his highly anticipated return at the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to begin on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates. The T20 format tournament will conclude with the final on September 28.
According to a report from Indian news agency PTI, Bumrah might be rested for the first Test against West Indies, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, to ensure his full fitness for the continental championship. The news has sent a wave of excitement among fans, who have been eagerly awaiting the return of the spearhead of India's pace attack.
Squad Selection and Strategic Decisions
The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to finalize India's Asia Cup squad between August 19 and 20. However, this depends on when the medical reports of the players are submitted by the sports science team at the National Cricket Centre of Excellence (CoE). In a positive development, Suryakumar Yadav, who was nursing an injury, has already resumed batting in the nets in Bengaluru.
The BCCI selection committee faces some tough strategic decisions. However, PTI reports that the selectors are likely to maintain the successful T20 formula that has been in place since Suryakumar Yadav took over the captaincy last July. The core of the T20 batting lineup—Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya—is expected to remain unchanged.
A BCCI source revealed to PTI, "Abhishek Sharma is the world's number one T20 batsman in the latest ICC rankings. Samson had a fantastic season with the bat and behind the stumps. While the decision is tough, we can't ignore Shubman's current form (even if it's in Tests). He also did well in the IPL. The problem for selectors is having too many performers at the top of the order."
Top Order Logjam and Omissions
This indicates that top-order stalwarts like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Sai Sudharsan are likely to miss out on the Asia Cup squad if the existing top five remain untouched. This is a significant blow for players like Gill, who scored 754 runs against England, and Sai, who was the highest run-scorer in the last IPL with 759 runs. They may have to watch the tournament from the sidelines. Even KL Rahul, India's primary ODI wicket-keeper, is at risk of being excluded, as his primary batting position is also at the top of the order in T20s.
Sanju Samson is the selectors' first-choice wicketkeeper. The battle for the second-choice spot is between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jurel was part of India's last T20 series against England, while Jitesh played a crucial role in Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL victory, excelling as a finisher.
Bowling All-rounders and Pace Attack
Hardik Pandya is the undisputed first-choice for the pace bowling all-rounder slot. Nitish Kumar, who got injured against England, is not expected to be fit in time for the squad announcement. Shivam Dube, who performed well against England, is also a strong contender. The two spin bowling all-rounders, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, are almost certain to secure their spots.
The biggest question remains: who will be the third pacer alongside Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh? PTI suggests the fight is between Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Krishna impressed with 25 wickets in the last IPL, while Rana is known for his ability to produce impactful deliveries.
