Rohit Sharma Rises to World No. 2 in ICC ODI Rankings Amid Retirement Buzz

Indian Captain Rohit Sharma Climbs to Second in ICC ODI Batting Rankings, Shubman Gill Holds Top Spot as Virat Kohli Also Features in Top 5

Rohit Sharma Rises to World No. 2 in ICC ODI Rankings Amid Retirement Buzz

NEW DELHI: As speculation mounts over his potential retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has made a significant leap, moving up to the second spot in the latest ICC ODI rankings for batsmen. This latest list solidifies India's dominance in white-ball cricket, with three Indian batsmen now ranked in the top five.

India Dominates the Top Tier

Rohit, widely regarded as one of the best white-ball players in the world, jumped one place to secure the number two position. The top spot, however, remains firmly with India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, who holds a commanding rating of 784. Rohit's current rating stands at 756.

The rest of the top five is a mix of cricketing titans. Pakistan's former captain, Babar Azam, dropped one spot to third with a rating of 756, largely due to his recent subpar performance against the West Indies. This drop paved the way for Rohit to climb up the rankings. India's star batsman, Virat Kohli, holds the fourth position with a rating of 736, maintaining his position on the list. The fifth spot is occupied by New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell, who has a rating of 720.

Shreyas Iyer Also Features in Top 10

Further adding to India's strong showing, another Indian batsman, Shreyas Iyer, has held his ground in the top 10. He is ranked eighth with a rating of 704, showing no change in his position.

Interestingly, Rohit Sharma's rise in the rankings comes despite a prolonged break from international cricket since the last Champions Trophy. He hasn't played an international match in over five months, yet his position has improved. Fans are eagerly awaiting his return, which is expected to be during the upcoming ODI series against Australia in October.
