MUNICH: The dramatic end to Cristiano Ronaldo's second stint at Manchester United remains a hot topic among football fans, with many pointing fingers at then-manager Erik ten Hag. Now, in a candid interview, the former United boss has finally opened up, refuting claims of a bitter personal feud with the Portuguese superstar.
Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford in 2021 was short-lived, concluding just 18 months later under a cloud of controversy. The relationship between the two reportedly hit rock bottom towards the end of the 2021-22 season, with the Dutch coach notably benching Ronaldo for several key matches. Following his departure, Ronaldo publicly expressed his grievances against Ten Hag.
Now managing Bayer Leverkusen, Ten Hag addressed the speculation directly. "I never had a problem with Ronaldo," he stated. "We both were trying to do what was best for the team. What happened is in the past now. Even after Ronaldo left, we went on to win two trophies. He is also playing great football in the Saudi League. I wish him all the best for the future."
Last season, under Ten Hag's guidance, Manchester United clinched the 2024 FA Cup. However, a poor start to the new season led to his mid-season dismissal, with Ruben Amorim taking over the reins. The Red Devils' struggles continued, and they ultimately finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League table.
Reflecting on his former club's current predicament, Ten Hag commented, "Manchester United is in a period of transition. They are trying to rebuild their squad. During this phase, the team management has to show faith in the coach."
Ten Hag's remarks offer a new perspective on one of the most talked-about sagas in recent football history, suggesting that the tensions were rooted in professional decisions rather than personal animosity.
