Agartala : In a significant crackdown on inter-state narcotics smuggling, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a massive consignment of cannabis (Ganja) at the Badharghat Railway Station in Agartala. The joint operation led to the apprehension of two youths carrying a substantial quantity of the illicit substance, valued at lakhs of rupees in the black market.
Details of the Seizure and Arrests
According to official sources, the alert security personnel intercepted the suspects during a routine search operation at the station premises. Upon inspecting their belongings, the police recovered packets containing a total of 21.48 kg of cannabis. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Agartala GRP Station confirmed that the arrested individuals have been identified as Bipin Kumar Mandal and Dhanraj Kumar, both residents of Bihar.
The estimated market value of the seized contraband is projected to be over four lakh rupees. The precision of the operation has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the persistent threat of railway-based drug trafficking routes connecting Tripura to other parts of India.
Unmasking the Inter-State Smuggling Syndicate
Preliminary interrogations have revealed a deeper network behind this smuggling attempt. The suspects confessed that the consignment was delivered to them at the station by the kingpin of the drug cartel. Their primary objective was to transport the cannabis via train to external states, acting as couriers for the larger syndicate.
"We have registered a case under the NDPS Act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) against the accused. Our primary focus now is to trace the mastermind who delivered the consignment at the station and dismantle the entire supply chain involved in this illegal trade," stated a senior police official.
The Tripura Police and railway security agencies have intensified their vigil at all major transit points. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to identify other associates linked to this narcotics smuggling ring. This successful operation underscores the proactive stance of the Agartala GRP in making the railways a safer and crime-free mode of transportation.
