Assam Election Shock: Congress Candidate Quits Hours Before Polling in Udalguri

Congress candidate Suren Daimary announces resignation ahead of Udalguri polling in Assam

UDALGURI (Assam) : In a massive setback for the Congress party, its official candidate for the Udalguri constituency, Suren Daimary, has resigned from the party just hours before the high-stakes Assam Legislative Assembly Elections. The move has sent shockwaves through the political landscape as voters prepare to head to the polls this Thursday.

Speaking to the media following his sudden exit, a visibly frustrated Daimary accused the Congress leadership of abandonment and "appeasement politics." He alleged that despite being handed the ticket, the party provided zero support for his campaign.

"Congress has stabbed me in the back," Daimary stated. "After giving me the ticket, they cut off all communication. I repeatedly called senior leaders for campaign coordination, but no one responded. I was left to fight this battle entirely alone."

While Daimary has officially severed ties with the party, legal technicalities mean he cannot withdraw his nomination at this late stage. Consequently, His name and the Congress symbol will remain on the EVM. Votes cast for him will still be recorded, despite his resignation.

Daimary further slammed the party for focusing on a specific community to gain votes, calling it a "politics of favoritism" that he could no longer support.

The Udalguri exit follows a series of high-profile defections from the Assam Congress, including former State President Bhupen Borah, who recently joined the BJP. Capitalizing on the chaos, the BJP has claimed that Congress has already "scented defeat" and has lost faith in its own candidates. In Udalguri, the race now continues between Rihan Daimary (BPF) and Dipen Boro (UPPL), with the Congress camp left in complete disarray.
