Sribhumi Matribhasha Suraksha Samiti Reconstitutes District Committee; Plans Sukanta Bhattacharya Centenary

SRIBHUMI, APRIL 18: In a significant move to strengthen the linguistic movement in Barak Valley, the Sribhumi district unit of Barak Valley Matribhasha Suraksha Samiti held a crucial meeting on Wednesday. Hosted at the residence of Sibani Biswas, the session served as a platform for reviewing current activities and charting a roadmap for the future protection of the mother tongue.

Formation of the New District Executive

The highlights of the meeting included the formal dissolution of the previous body and the unanimous formation of a new district committee. Sibani Biswas was elected as the President, while Basudeb Sen took charge as Vice-President. Nandan Kumar Nath was appointed General Secretary, supported by Tutior Rahman as Assistant Secretary.

The cultural wing will be led by Debjyoti Chakraborty and Bishnupada Nag, while Gita Saha and Ranjit Kumar Deb will oversee the literary department. Pratimraj Bhattacharya has been entrusted with organizational and publicity duties, with Sanchita Bhattacharya serving as the Treasurer. The executive committee also includes esteemed members like Goutam Chowdhury, Supriyo Deb, and Sunanda Chowdhury, with Swapan Banik as the Advisor.

Commemorating Poet Sukanta Bhattacharya’s Centenary

The Sribhumi district unit has decided to mark the birth centenary of Poet Sukanta Bhattacharya with grand celebrations. "Our goal is to engage educational institutions and cultural organizations to spread the message of the 'Kishore Kobi' among the youth," the committee stated. A special preparatory meeting for the Sukanta Bhattacharya Birth Centenary Celebration Committee has been scheduled for April 25.

To ensure consistent progress, the Matribhasha Suraksha Samiti will now meet on the second Saturday of every month. The next executive session is slated for May 9, 2026, at 6:00 PM. President Sibani Biswas concluded the meeting by urging all members to work with renewed vigor to safeguard the linguistic heritage of Barak Valley.
