IMPHAL EAST, APRIL 18 : The volatile atmosphere in Manipur witnessed a fresh surge of unrest late Wednesday as security forces deployed tear gas canisters to disperse a massive torch rally in the Khurai Lamlong area. The incident has sent ripples of tension across several pockets of Imphal East, highlighting the deepening divide and public outcry over the state's security situation.
The Khurai Lamlong Stand-off
The demonstration was organized by the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) along with several local civil bodies. A large contingent of women protesters led the march, moving through the streets of Imphal East toward the Khurai Lamlong market. Carrying flaming torches, the participants raised slogans against the central forces and vowed to "protect their motherland" at any cost.
Anticipating trouble, the state and central security forces had established a heavy presence, erecting barricades to prevent the rally from moving beyond designated points. However, the situation turned chaotic when protesters attempted to push through the cordon. A brief but intense scuffle ensued, prompting the security forces to resort to tear gas shells to regain control of the escalating crowd.
Deep-Rooted Outrage Over Tragic Losses
The current wave of Manipur protests is largely a reaction to a devastating attack in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district. The brutal bomb explosion that killed two sleeping children and critically injured their mother has left the state in a state of mourning and fury. "The blood of our children cannot go in vain; our silence ends today," remarked a local leader during the night vigil.
In recent days, the state has witnessed a shift in protest tactics, with daytime sit-in demonstrations giving way to aggressive nocturnal torch rallies. Thursday’s clash follows a similar violent encounter near Singjamei, where a march starting from Lilong was met with a heavy-handed response from the law enforcement agencies.
Security Monitoring and Public Safety
With Manipur civil unrest showing no signs of abating, authorities are keeping a close watch on protest-hit zones. Sporadic reports of skirmishes continue to emerge from the capital and its outskirts. "Our priority remains the safety of the public, but we urge the citizens to maintain peace," a high-ranking official stated, emphasizing the fragility of the law and order situation.
As the night progressed, a heavy blanket of security remained in Imphal East. The community-led movements have made it clear that their agitation will continue until tangible security measures are implemented on the ground to safeguard civilian lives.
