Burned remains of motorcycle garages and lathe workshops at Hospital Road, Silchar after a devastating dawn fire.

News Desk, Cachar Times | Silchar

In a tragic turn of events on the early morning of April 14, a massive conflagration broke out in the busy Hospital Road area of Silchar, reducing four business establishments to ashes. The fire, which reportedly ignited around 4:00 AM, has caused damages estimated to be worth several lakhs, leaving business owners and workers in a state of shock and despair.

Heroic Efforts by Fire Services to Contain the Blaze

The alarm was raised at dawn when thick smoke began billowing from a workshop. The Tarapur Fire Station responded immediately, but as the flames spread rapidly, additional support was summoned from Rangirkhari, Udharbond, and Sonai. A total of six fire engines fought heroically for several hours before the inferno could be brought under control.

Despite the swift intervention, the fire managed to swallow two motorcycle garages, a lathe machine workshop, and a small retail shop. The affected businesses include Lakshmi Welding Works, Omar Ali Auto Works, a shop owned by a businessman surnamed Patwa, and Sukumar Debnath's betel shop.

"Everything we built over the years turned into charcoal in just a few hours. We are not just looking at burned walls; we are looking at the end of our only source of income," lamented one of the affected shop owners.

Livelihoods Destroyed: 20 Families Pushed to the Brink

The aftermath of the Silchar Hospital Road fire is a grim picture of charred machinery and melted metal. Eyewitnesses confirmed the destruction of two expensive lathe machines, a scooty, several motorcycles, and various welding equipment. For the owners—Omar Ali, Nurul Haque, Binoy Kumar Yadav, and Sukumar Debnath—the loss is catastrophic.

Beyond the owners, the fire has cast a shadow over the lives of nearly 15 to 20 daily wage laborers who depended on these shops for their survival. Compounding the tragedy, one of the shop owners is currently out of the state for medical treatment, making the situation even more difficult for the family to manage.

Investigation Underway Amidst Local Suspicion

While the fire department is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, local residents have hinted at mysterious circumstances surrounding the incident. However, the police have urged the public not to speculate while the forensic analysis is ongoing. A detailed report on the total valuation of the property damage is expected soon.

As the smoke clears, the victims have issued a collective appeal to the District Administration and the Government for immediate financial assistance. Without state support, reclaiming their livelihood and rebuilding these small businesses seems like an impossible uphill battle for these hardworking families.
