Mizoram Launches First Phase of Digital Census 2027: Officials Urge Public Cooperation

Census Officials addressing the press at Aizawl Press Club regarding Mizoram Census 2027.

AIZAWL, APRIL 18: Marking a historic shift in administrative data collection, the first phase of Mizoram’s Census 2027 officially commenced on Thursday. This decadal exercise, returning after a gap of 15 years, will be the first-ever digital census in the state's history, as confirmed during a joint press conference held by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the Directorate of Census Operations, Mizoram.

Phase-I: House Listing and Housing Census

Addressing the media at the Aizawl Press Club, Director of Census Operations, Vinod P. Khable, outlined the two-phase roadmap. The first phase, known as House Listing and Housing Census (HLO), will be conducted from April 16 to May 15, 2026. The final Population Enumeration is scheduled for February 2027.

Officials revealed that a self-enumeration window was provided earlier this month, where over 10,294 families in Mizoram successfully submitted their details online. "This digital transition ensures higher accuracy and faster processing of national data," stated Khable, accompanied by senior officials including Additional Secretary Irene Zohimpuii Chongthu and AMC Commissioner Joseph H. Lalramsanga.

Privacy and Caste Census Data

A significant highlight of the Census 2027 is the inclusion of caste-based data, returning after 1931. Addressing concerns regarding data privacy, the Director reassured citizens that all information is protected under Section 15 of the Census Act 1948. "Personal data is strictly confidential and will never be shared; results are only published at village or ward levels," he added.

A Call for Public Cooperation

The administration has urged residents to assist enumerators and supervisors during their visits. Allowing officials to mark house numbers and providing accurate family information is crucial for the success of this national project. Officials further clarified that the census is a purely statistical exercise and poses no risk to anyone's citizenship status.

With the Mizoram government ensuring full security and transparency, the active participation of every resident is expected to make Digital Census 2027 a benchmark for future administrative planning in the Northeast.
