Karimganj: Amidst a high-security blanket, the only repoll in the entire state of Assam was successfully conducted on Saturday at the Babyland English High School polling station in North Karimganj. Following the Election Commission's directive due to previous irregularities, the local administration ensured a peaceful and transparent voting process, recording a significant voter turnout of approximately 62%.
Unprecedented Security and Administrative Vigilance
While the state of Assam recently concluded its general elections in a single phase, North Karimganj became the center of attention as the sole location requiring a repoll. Voting began at 7:00 AM under a massive deployment of security personnel that turned the area into a fortress. Throughout the day, both the District Commissioner (DC) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) were seen conducting frequent inspections to oversee the proceedings and prevent any untoward incidents. Interestingly, the usual crowds of political party workers were missing from the vicinity of the polling center, maintaining a calm atmosphere. Candidates Subrata Bhattacharya and Zakaria Ahmed Panna visited the site briefly but left the area shortly after.
Digital Surveillance and Strict Action Against Malpractice
The decision to hold a repoll at this specific center—Station No. 599—stemmed from a serious breach during the initial voting round, where miscreants managed to engage in proxy voting or "booth jamming." The entire incident was captured on CCTV, prompting the Election Commission of India to invalidate the previous votes and order a fresh mandate. Out of the 599 registered voters, a total of 370 individuals exercised their franchise this Saturday. The District Commissioner confirmed that the EVMs were safely transported to the strong room at Karimganj College immediately after the polls closed at 5:00 PM. Furthermore, the DC stated that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged, and the police are actively working to arrest those identified in the CCTV footage for electoral malpractice.
