The festive spirit of Pohela Boishakh was marred by tragedy on Thursday afternoon when a horrific road accident occurred in the Gadarpul area of Katamani. A violent head-on collision between two auto-rickshaws resulted in severe injuries to five individuals, sending shockwaves through the local community.

A Fateful Encounter on the Lowairpoa-Kanmun Road

According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the collision at Gadarpul involved an electric auto-rickshaw (Registration No. AS-10-BC-7217) and a petrol-powered auto-rickshaw (Registration No. AS-10-BC-6617). The electric vehicle was traveling from Ichabil toward Katamani, while the petrol auto was heading in the opposite direction. The two vehicles crashed into each other with immense force on the Lowairpoa-Kanmun road, leaving both transport units extensively damaged.

The impact was so severe that local residents rushed to the spot upon hearing the deafening sound of the crash. "It was a scene of total chaos. The passengers were trapped inside the mangled remains of the autos, crying for help," recounted a local resident who witnessed the immediate aftermath.

Swift Police Response and Medical Emergency

Upon receiving the news, personnel from the Katamani Watch Post displayed exemplary promptness by reaching the accident site within minutes. The police, with the help of locals, executed a swift rescue operation. The injured victims were identified as Anguri Bibi, Bulnei Chorei, Randhir Paul, Islam Uddin, and Afzalur Rahman. It is reported that Afzalur Rahman was the driver of one of the vehicles.

The victims were initially rushed to the Bazaricherra Hospital. However, due to the critical nature of their injuries, they were subsequently shifted to the Makunda Christian Leprosy and General Hospital for advanced medical intervention. As of the time of filing this report, all five victims remain under intensive medical care at Makunda Hospital.

"Our priority was to ensure the golden hour was not lost. Our officers worked tirelessly to shift the injured to the nearest facility to save lives," stated a source from the local police station.

Investigation and Vehicle Seizure

The Bazaricherra Police have officially taken custody of the two accident-stricken vehicles for further technical inspection. While the exact cause of the crash—whether it was mechanical failure or driver negligence—is yet to be determined, an investigation has been launched to prevent such recurring tragedies on this stretch of the road.

The road safety in Cachar district remains a concern for many, especially during festive seasons when traffic volume increases. Local authorities have urged drivers to maintain speed limits and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians alike.
