SILCHAR | April, 24
In a significant move toward communal solidarity, a representative meeting convened by cultural organizer Nikhil Paul has resolved to organize a single, unified procession titled ‘Unisher Mahamichil : Bhasha Shahidder Shradhanjali’ to honor the language martyrs of May 19. The rally is scheduled to commence from the Silchar Railway Station (Bhasha Shahid Station) at 7:00 AM on May 19.
To oversee the execution of this initiative, a 23-member committee was unanimously formed during the meeting, with Subrata Bhattacharya appointed as the Convenor.
The discussion, presided over by Ashis Bhowmik, focused on the necessity of a collective tribute. Addressing the gathering, Nikhil Paul noted that while efforts were made last year to merge various rallies, logistical challenges meant two separate processions still took place. He expressed concern over the dwindling attendance seen in recent years, particularly at sites like Gandhibagh and the Crematorium (Shmashanghat), compared to the multi-day rallies held from May 16–18 in 2024.
"May 19 teaches us unity," Paul stated. "Everyone is committed to their mother tongue, and it is through this shared responsibility that we should send a message of harmony to society. Instead of multiple scattered rallies, we urge everyone to join a single procession to pay a truly dignified tribute to the martyrs."
The meeting saw the presence of prominent figures including Dilip Sinha, Dr. Vishwatos Choudhury, and Sanjeeb Roy. Several others shared their perspectives, including Subrata Bhattacharya, Joy Bardia, Sabyasachi Rudragupta, Deepak Sengupta, Arundhati Gupta, Chayan Bhattacharya, Amit Sikidar, Joydeep Chakraborty, Soumitra Dutta, Ajay Roy, Sayan Biswas, Nandini Chakraborty, Rajat Ghosh, and Moutusi Biswas.
