AGP proposes Himanta Biswa Sarma as CM. All 10 elected MLAs of Asom Gana Parishad back Himanta for leadership.
GUWAHATI : Amidst the ongoing political buzz regarding government formation in Dispur, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has sent a strong message of unity within the alliance. In a crucial legislative party meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Ambari, the AGP formally and unanimously proposed the name of Himanta Biswa Sarma for the post of Chief Minister.
The meeting carries significant weight as the NDA partners aim to maintain a cohesive front before the official swearing-in ceremony. Although the BJP holds a comfortable majority, the endorsement from a key regional ally like AGP reinforces the stability of the coalition. "The development and progress witnessed in every corner of the state over the last five years were led by Himanta Biswa Sarma. We want this momentum to continue under his leadership," said AGP President Atul Bora.
Leadership Structure Finalized within AGP
During the session, Atul Bora, the MLA from Bokakhat, was re-elected as the leader of the AGP legislative party. Senior leader and Kaliabor MLA Keshav Mahanta has been appointed as the Deputy Leader. The party also assigned key organizational roles, with Dr. Tapan Das of Dimoria named as the Secretary and Dharmeswar Ray of Bajali appointed as the Chief Whip.
This year, the AGP contested 27 seats and managed to secure victory in 10, bringing a mix of seasoned veterans and fresh faces to the Assam Assembly. Elected members include Prithviraj Rava (Tezpur), Jibesh Roy (Bilasipara), and Deeptimayi Choudhury (Bongaigaon), among others. The party leadership expressed confidence that this mandate reflects the people's trust in regional interests blended with overall state development.
BJP Leadership Visits Ambari in a Show of Strength
Soon after the AGP meeting concluded, a high-level BJP delegation led by State President Dillip Saikia arrived at the Ambari office. The delegation, which included Jayanta Malla Baruah and Queen Oja, was warmly welcomed with the traditional Phulam Gamosa. While termed a "courtesy visit," political analysts view this as a strategic move to signal that the BJP-AGP alliance is more robust than ever.
With the support of its allies firmly in place, the focus now shifts back to the final formalities of government formation. For the AGP, the priority remains addressing the issues of Khilonjia (indigenous) people and ensuring rapid development in their respective constituencies. As Atul Bora aptly put it, "The success in this election has brought us new responsibilities toward the people of Assam."
