The Central government has intensified its stand against illegal constructions near India’s international borders. Amid ongoing demolition drives in several parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has now issued fresh and strict instructions regarding border security and unauthorised structures.

According to official sources, Amit Shah directed authorities to remove all illegal constructions located within 15 kilometres of international border areas. The Home Minister also asked officials to maintain strict surveillance on financial transactions in banks operating in border regions.

Focus on Border Security and Smuggling Control

The Centre has additionally instructed agencies to closely monitor business establishments operating near border zones. Authorities have also been asked to strengthen measures against cross-border smuggling and identify fake documents being used for illegal activities.

The latest directive comes at a time when border security has become a major administrative focus in eastern India, particularly in West Bengal.

BSF Gets Over 142 Acres of Land in Bengal

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has accelerated the process of land transfer for border fencing and security infrastructure. For a long time, several districts in the state faced complications over land acquisition for border fencing projects due to objections from local residents.

Recently, Nabanna instructed district administrations to quickly identify and hand over land required for strengthening border security arrangements. Last week, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee formally initiated the process at Nabanna Sabha Ghar.

On Wednesday, the Chief Minister announced that a total of 142.79 acres of land had been handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF). The land will mainly be used for constructing border outposts and improving surveillance systems along the international border.

District-Wise Land Allocation

According to the official statement, the BSF received 22.925 acres in Cooch Behar, 35.165 acres in Jalpaiguri, 8.815 acres in Darjeeling, 2.84 acres in Uttar Dinajpur and 20.1701 acres in Dakshin Dinajpur.

Additionally, 10.90 acres in Malda, 38.805 acres in Murshidabad, 0.55 acres in Nadia and 2.6 acres in North 24 Parganas have also been transferred to the BSF.

Officials believe that the strengthened infrastructure will help security forces work more effectively to prevent infiltration and cross-border smuggling activities.
