Lawyers in Barak Valley unite to demand a High Court Bench to ensure affordable justice for locals.
Sribhumi : In a significant move to ensure accessible justice, the legal fraternity of Barak Valley has once again voiced a collective demand for the establishment of a High Court Bench in the region. Members of the District Bar Association and the District Advocates’ Bar Association recently held a joint meeting to strategize their movement, aiming to ease the legal and financial burden on the local population.
A Unified Voice for Legal Accessibility
The legal experts have decided to convene a larger assembly involving representatives from all bar associations across the valley at a central location. This unified front intends to intensify the 40-year-old struggle for a High Court Bench in Barak Valley. The lawyers emphasized that the geographical distance to the principal seat of the High Court often acts as a barrier to justice for many residents.
"We are reviving our long-standing demand through a collective effort. A joint meeting has already been held, and soon we will invite members from all bars in the valley to chart our future course of action," stated senior legal representatives.
Addressing the Economic Burden on Litigants
Highlighting the socio-economic challenges, the lawyers noted that Barak Valley remains economically disadvantaged compared to other regions. Currently, litigants are forced to spend substantial amounts on travel and legal fees to pursue cases at the Gauhati High Court. For many, these expenses are prohibitive, often leading to a delay or denial of justice.
Leaders including Atikul Bari Choudhury and Dulu Ranjan Das of the District Bar Association, along with Tarun Chakraborty and Bijon Kumar Paul of the District Advocates’ Bar Association, pointed out that the Barak Valley Lawyers' Association had been championing this cause for years. Although the movement faced several interruptions in the past, the current resolve appears stronger than ever.
The proposed permanent High Court Bench is seen as a crucial step toward the holistic development of the region. By bringing the judiciary closer to the people, the legal community hopes to provide a faster, more affordable legal remedy for the citizens of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts.
