Three Held in Bilonia Cattle Theft Crackdown; Police Suspect 20–25 Member Gang

Tripura, 22 May : In a significant breakthrough in the series of cattle theft cases reported across Bilonia sub-division, police have detained three suspects — Sabuj Mia, Imran Hossain, and a juvenile — following a targeted operation in Melaghar on Wednesday. Acting on mobile phone leads, the accused were apprehended and subsequently handed over to Bilonia police. On Thursday, they were produced before the Bilonia court, where police filed an application for remand.

SP Addresses Press : "An Organised Gang Is Behind This"

Speaking to journalists at the office of the Bilonia police station Officer-in-Charge on Thursday afternoon, Superintendent of Police (South District) Maurya Krishna C. revealed that preliminary investigations point to a well-organised criminal network of 20 to 25 individuals operating behind the thefts. He confirmed that efforts to identify all members of the gang are already underway, and assured that every individual involved would be brought to justice.

The SP also appealed to the public, stating :

If anyone notices suspicious movement or illegal transportation of livestock in their area, they should immediately report it to the nearest police station. Operations are continuing on a sustained basis.

52 Cattle Stolen Since April — Public Anger Forced Police Into Action

The arrests come against a backdrop of mounting public frustration. Since April, as many as 52 cases of cattle theft have been reported from various parts of Bilonia sub-division. Residents, angered by what they perceived as police inaction, took to the streets — staging road blockades and organising deputation programmes to press their demands.

It was only after this public outcry that the administration swung into action. As part of the intensified crackdown, Melaghar police conducted a targeted raid, detained the three suspects, and transferred them to Bilonia police custody for further questioning.

Investigations are currently ongoing. Police are actively working to establish the full extent of the network and identify any remaining members who may still be at large.
