India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally accused the satirical social media campaign known as the 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP) of being a foreign-backed influence operation designed to destabilise the Indian government — and has called for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) inquiry into the viral movement.
BJP Alleges Foreign Hand Behind Viral Campaign
Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar took to social media platform X on Saturday to assert that CJP is not a grassroots political satire movement but a calculated cross-border influence operation targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration. He claimed that factions within the domestic opposition were actively aiding this alleged foreign-engineered campaign.
Chandrasekhar warned that the misuse of social media, bots, and artificial intelligence (AI) to manufacture artificial public opinion poses a serious threat to national stability, and that several foreign powers — reportedly unhappy with India's economic rise under Modi — are attempting to obstruct the country's progress through such campaigns.
What Is the Cockroach Janta Party?
The CJP movement is a satirical online campaign reportedly launched earlier this month by political strategist Deepak E, a former associate of the Aam Aadmi Party. The campaign gained rapid momentum — particularly among younger audiences — after remarks by the Chief Justice of India sparked a debate on social media. The Chief Justice later clarified that his comments were directed at individuals practising law with fraudulent degrees, not at legitimate lawyers.
Despite the controversy, CJP's Instagram following has reportedly surpassed 20 million, reflecting its extraordinary viral reach.
NIA Probe Demand Backed by Rajya Sabha MP
A BJP Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament has also thrown his weight behind the demand for an NIA investigation. The MP argued that the Chief Justice's remarks were being deliberately misrepresented as an attack on the legal community at large, while the actual intent was to expose fake-degree holders practising in courts.
Citing data from the Bar Council of India, he also made a startling claim: between 35 and 40 percent of individuals seen wearing black robes inside courtrooms may be in possession of fraudulent law degrees.
BJP Reaffirms Confidence in India's Trajectory
In his post, Chandrasekhar also praised Modi's leadership in navigating global crises — including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia–Ukraine war, the global fuel crisis, and Chinese aggression — while keeping India's economy on a stable growth path. He concluded with a firm assertion that no external force or domestic detractor could derail India's development agenda.
