A devastating explosion at a coal mine in northern China has killed at least 90 workers, with more than a hundred others believed to be buried under rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing at a frantic pace as President Xi Jinping has ordered an all-out, war-footing response to locate and save those still missing.

Blast Strikes Liushenniu Mine in Changzhi City

The explosion occurred at the Liushenniu coal mine in Changzhi city, Shanxi province, at approximately 7:30 pm local time on Friday. At the time of the blast, 247 workers were underground. Official sources have confirmed that at least 90 of them did not survive, while fears are mounting that many more among the trapped may not be rescued alive. Several workers have also sustained injuries.

Xi Jinping Orders War-Footing Rescue Mission

Chinese President Xi Jinping has personally directed authorities to treat the rescue effort with the urgency of a wartime operation, insisting that no effort be spared in locating every missing worker. He has simultaneously ordered a full investigation into the cause of the blast, and warned that anyone found responsible for negligence or safety violations will face strict legal consequences.

Shanxi — The Heart of China's Coal Industry

Shanxi province is China's primary coal-mining region — a territory larger than Greece, home to roughly 34 million people. Last year alone, Shanxi's mines produced 1.3 trillion tonnes of coal, accounting for approximately one-third of China's total national output. The province's economic reliance on coal mining makes it particularly vulnerable to such disasters, which have claimed thousands of lives over the decades.

Rescue Operations Underway

Emergency teams are working rapidly to clear debris and reach workers still buried underground. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the precise number of those unaccounted for, but the scale of the blast — and the number of workers present at the time — suggests the final toll could rise considerably. The investigation into what triggered the explosion is expected to begin in parallel with the ongoing rescue effort.
