Sribhumi : The relentless and devastating riverbank erosion by the Longai River has triggered widespread panic and anxiety among the residents of Asaighat village, located under Ward No. 9 of Radhapur GP in Lowairpoa block. Over the past few years, several families have been forced to abandon their ancestral homes and seek shelter elsewhere, as large parts of the village continue to slide into the river.
Arable Land Submerged and Commuter Footpaths Destroyed
The situation has turned critical with multiple residential houses now sitting on the brink of collapse. Frequent cave-ins along the riverbanks have severely damaged the connecting roads, making daily commuting hazardous for locals, including school and college students. Furthermore, vast stretches of fertile agricultural land have been completely swallowed by the turbulent waters, crippling the livelihood of local farmers.
Adding to the villagers' plight is the administrative delay in constructing a proposed concrete bridge at the local ferry ghat. We are forced to risk our lives on fragile bamboo bridges during the dry season and rely on country boats during the monsoon,
a distressed villager lamented, highlighting the acute communication crisis in the region.
Villagers Demand Stone Embankment and Concrete Bridge Construction
Faced with regular displacement, the aggrieved residents of Asaighat village have urgently appealed to the departmental authorities for permanent solutions. The public is demanding the immediate installation of a geo-bag or stone embankment to arrest further erosion, alongside the speedy construction of the long-pending concrete bridge. Until the authorities intervene, the vulnerable population remains at the mercy of the expanding river.
