BADARPUR : In a solemn collaborative initiative, Nabinchandra College and the Badarpur Press Club jointly observed the 66th Language Martyrs Day on campus. Managed by the college’s Cultural Cell, the programme began at 11:00 AM with students, faculty, and local journalists paying respectful floral tributes at the central martyr’s memorial to honour the heroes of the 1961 movement.

Speakers Highlight Identity and History of the Bengali Language Movement

The commemorative event featured insight-driven discussions mapping the historical journey of Barak Valley Language Martyrs Day. Opening the seminar, Zainal Abedin Tapadar, Coordinator of the Commerce Department, revisited the events of 1961, recalling how eleven brave individuals sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue. Following him, Associate Professor of Economics, Soumitra Choudhury, delivered a moving speech connecting language to human existence, comparing one's native language to mother's milk.

Dr. Vishnu Chandra De, Head of the Bengali Department, explained the deep contemporary relevance of 19 May. He paid rich tributes to the core martyrs who secured the linguistic rights enjoyed by the region today, while also remembering Jishu and Jagan, who made the supreme sacrifice in subsequent linguistic struggles. Dr. De concluded his speech with a poignant poetry recitation.

Community and Campus Unite in Remembrance

The event also saw active participation from civil society. Prominent social worker Deepak Deb provided an extensive breakdown of the historical resistance against state-imposed linguistic aggression. Badarpur Press Club President Jishu Shuklabaidya and student union member Biprajyoti Roy also addressed the gathering, reaffirming the community's commitment to the cause.

"Our mother tongue is intrinsically linked to our cultural identity; protecting its legacy is a collective duty for the next generation," noted the speakers.

The academic and media fraternity turned up in large numbers for this significant Badarpur Press Club news event. The programme, which included another soulful poetry reading by Associate Professor Dr. Barnashri Bakshi, was smoothly conducted by Dr. Sushmita Nath, Convenor of the college's Cultural Cell.
