Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra laid wreaths at the memorial. Senior party figures including Ashok Gehlot, P. Chidambaram, and Mukul Wasnik were also present, along with a large gathering of party workers and supporters.

Leaders Remember a Statesman Ahead of His Time

Speaking to IANS, Congress leader Jagdish Tytler said he had never seen a leader or a human being quite like Rajiv Gandhi — a man of deep humanity, scientific temperament, concern for children, and far-reaching plans for India's youth. Congress veteran Mani Shankar Aiyar urged people to re-read the words inscribed at Veer Bhumi, saying they capture, in just a few lines, the essence of Rajiv Gandhi's life, his message, and the India he had dreamed of — a dream he warned was today under serious threat.

Rajiv Gandhi had a very clear vision for India — especially its youth. The entire nation had enormous expectations from him. — Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Leader of Opposition, Haryana Assembly

Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav credited Rajiv Gandhi with giving the country a new direction and energy, pointing specifically to his role in initiating India's computer revolution and laying the groundwork for the nation's digital transformation. Congress leader Srinivas B.V. described the day as Sadbhavana Diwas and affirmed that Rajiv Gandhi's ideals and vision continue to be carried forward across India and the world.

India's Youngest Prime Minister: A Brief Life, A Lasting Legacy

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi entered politics following the assassination of his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in October 1984. At just 40, he became India's youngest-ever Prime Minister, serving until December 1989. On May 21, 1991, he was killed in a suicide bombing at an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu — a date now observed annually as Sadbhavana Diwas across the country.
