GANGTOK : In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national call for fuel conservation and responsible governance, Sikkim has scripted history by becoming the first state in the country to launch an odd-even vehicle movement system. The state administration confirmed on Tuesday that the new transport regulations have been officially rolled out across the Himalayan region.

Private and Government Vehicles Regulated; Taxis Exempted

Under the new directives, only private and government vehicles with registration numbers ending in odd digits were permitted to ply on Tuesday. Vehicles with even numbers will take over the state highways on Wednesday. To prevent economic disruptions in Gangtok transport news circles, commercial taxis and two-wheelers have been strictly exempted from these restrictions.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, widely known as Prem Singh Golay, stated that no restrictions will apply on Saturdays and Sundays to minimize public inconvenience. Public Divided Over Mountain Terrain Challenges and Sustainability

The sudden implementation has sparked mixed reactions among local residents. While some praise the environmental initiative, others highlight the harsh realities of the mountainous terrain where connectivity is limited outside major urban hubs.

"Sikkim has historically led the nation in sustainable development policies. By adopting public transport, the Chief Minister is setting a great benchmark," noted Remon Chhetri, a local resident.

Conversely, resident Keshav Sapkota argued that the move remains largely symbolic given Sikkim’s relatively small vehicular population. To smoothen inter-district travel between Namchi, Gyalshing, Soreng, and Gangtok, citizens have requested the government to consider district-specific relaxations.
