Silchar’s First Link Road Submerged: Early Rains Expose Crumbling Urban Infrastructure

Residents of Silchar's Link Road face severe waterlogging as early rains expose the city's crumbling drainage system and broken water pipes.

Flooded streets and clogged drains in Silchar Link Road area.

Silchar News : Even before the full onset of the monsoon, the residents of Silchar’s First Link Road are grappling with severe waterlogging. The recent spell of continuous rainfall has turned the lanes and bylanes into virtual streams, leaving locals in deep distress and raising serious questions about the city's urban drainage management.

Overflowing Drains and Property Damage

Local residents, including Swapan Dhar, Tinku Deb, and Pradip Purkayastha, expressed their frustration over the recurring crisis. According to them, even a brief downpour causes the clogged drains to overflow, forcing dirty water into residential premises. This has not only disrupted daily life but has also led to significant property damage as sewage water enters households.

"Every year, we hear tall promises of development, but the reality on the ground remains unchanged. We are forced to wade through filthy drain water just to step out of our homes," lamented a local resident.

Broken Pipelines and Lack of Administrative Action

The situation has been further aggravated by leaking water supply pipes in the area. While clean water wastes away on the streets, the silt-heavy drains remain incapable of carrying away the rainwater. Despite numerous memorandums submitted to the district administration and local representatives, a permanent solution remains elusive.

The residents have now put forward a three-point demand: immediate cleaning of all major drains, repair of broken water pipes, and the implementation of a modern drainage system. With the peak monsoon season yet to arrive, there is a looming fear of a much larger humanitarian crisis in the neighborhood.

Warning the authorities of a potential mass protest, the people of Link Road have urged the Silchar Municipal Board and the state government to intervene before the situation spirals out of control. For now, the citizens remain at the mercy of the weather, waiting for their grievances to be heard beyond paper-based promises.
