Life at Risk: Dilapidated Roads and 'Century of Potholes' Haunt Silchar’s Lifeline

Pothole-ridden roads from Capital Point to Rangirkhari spark public outrage. Residents and traders demand immediate repair as accidents rise.

Dilapidated road conditions and large potholes at Silchar Central Road causing frequent accidents.

Silchar : Commuters navigating the stretch from Capital Point to Rangirkhari—one of the city’s busiest and most vital arteries—are facing a harrowing daily struggle. Over the months, a lack of consistent maintenance has transformed this crucial road into a hazardous landscape of craters and deep potholes, leaving drivers and passengers in constant fear for their lives.

A Trail of Neglect: From Capital Point to Rangirkhari

A ground-level inspection reveals a disturbing pattern of urban decay. Starting from Capital Point, the road rapidly deteriorates, with massive craters appearing right in front of M-Bazar. The situation worsens significantly at Central Road, where frustrated locals have dubbed the scene a “Century of Potholes.”

The trail of neglect continues through Nahata Point, Nazirpatty, and Premtala, extending toward Hospital Road. In front of the Civil Hospital and the Rangirkhari market area, the road has practically vanished, replaced by a series of treacherous pits that make navigation nearly impossible during peak hours.

"The current state of Central Road, a commercial hub, is pathetic. We witness accidents almost daily—scooters, bikes, and e-rickshaws frequently overturn. People are suffering, yet the authorities remain silent," says Suraj Banik, a local businessman.

Business and Daily Life Under Siege

The poor road infrastructure has not only affected safety but has also dealt a severe blow to the local economy. Traders report a significant drop in footfall as customers avoid these broken paths. Arun Pal, a local resident, noted that the business community is "bearing the brunt of this negligence," while students and office-goers face chronic delays due to stagnant traffic.

The problem is compounded by a failing drainage system. Even minor rainfall turns these potholes into invisible traps filled with murky water. The lack of proper runoff means water remains stagnant on the road surface, further eroding the bitumen and triggering massive traffic congestion across the city center.

Public Outrage Over Administrative Apathy

Despite repeated appeals to the relevant departments, no effective measures have been taken to address the crisis. The silence from public representatives has only fueled the growing anger among the citizenry.

"In the past, we used to see at least minor repairs before elections, but now even that has stopped. It is shameful that representatives are busy trading blame while the public suffers," remarked Pintu Dhar, a resident of Premtala.

The Urgent Need for Intervention

Citizens are now questioning the role of the administration in maintaining urban safety standards. The demand is clear: an immediate and comprehensive overhaul of the road surface and a modern solution for the drainage crisis. Without swift intervention, Silchar’s most important thoroughfare risks becoming entirely non-functional, further isolating key commercial and healthcare zones.
