KOLKATA : In a major administrative crackdown, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced the suspension of three senior IPS officers in connection with the RG Kar Medical College investigation, commonly referred to as the Abhaya Case.
Addressing a press conference at Nabanna, the Chief Minister confirmed that the RG Kar case file will be reopened to ensure absolute transparency. The decision comes following serious allegations of professional negligence and "mishandling" of evidence during the initial stages of the probe.
Crackdown on Police Negligence
The suspended officials include former Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former DC Central Indira Mukherjee, and former DC North Abhishek Gupta. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the Chief Minister stated that a judicial inquiry would soon be initiated against them.
"There were serious lapses in the investigation process. To ensure justice for Abhaya, we have decided to hold those in power accountable," Adhikari told reporters.
Presidency Jail Mobile Racket Exposed
Beyond the police reforms, the Chief Minister made a startling revelation regarding the Presidency Jail administration. Following a tip-off from inmates' relatives, a massive raid was conducted on Thursday evening, leading to the seizure of 23 mobile phones from inside the prison cells.
The Presidency Jail raid has exposed a deep-rooted nexus between a section of jail authorities and high-profile inmates. Reports suggest that notorious figures, including Sheikh Shahjahan, were allegedly using mobile phones frequently behind bars. This illegal practice is believed to have been operational for years, dating back to the previous regime.
Taking immediate action, the state has suspended Presidency Jail Superintendent N. Kujur and Chief Controller Dipto Ghorai. The Chief Minister has officially handed over the Presidency Jail investigation to the CID for a comprehensive inquiry into this security breach.
This twin-strike by the administration signals a Zero-Tolerance policy towards corruption and negligence, aiming to restore public faith in the state's legal and correctional systems.
