KOLKATA : In a historic political shift, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first-ever BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday. The grand ceremony, held at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground, marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new political chapter for the state.
Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Adhikari in the presence of a massive gathering. The event was graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from various NDA-governed states, signaling the national importance of this victory.
A Landmark Mandate for Change
The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a resounding victory in the West Bengal Assembly Elections, winning 207 seats in the 294-member house. This landslide win effectively ended the 15-year tenure of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). For the first time in nearly five decades—following long spells of Left Front and TMC rule—the lotus has finally bloomed in the corridors of power in Bengal.
"This is not just a win for a party; it is a victory for the people of Bengal who have long yearned for Asol Poriborton (real change)," a senior party leader remarked during the ceremony.
The New Cabinet and Political Transition
Alongside the Chief Minister, several prominent leaders took their oaths as part of the new BJP Cabinet in Bengal. The new team includes Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Khudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik. This diverse cabinet is expected to focus on rapid development and restoring the law and order situation in the state.
However, the transition of power was not without its hurdles. The political atmosphere remained tense until the very end. Despite the clear mandate, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed reluctance to resign initially, alleging irregularities in the polling process. Nevertheless, the democratic verdict prevailed, leading to today's historic swearing-in ceremony.
As the new West Bengal Government takes charge, the eyes of the nation are on Kolkata to see how this leadership reshapes the future of one of India's most politically significant states.
