Chennai : In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Indian political landscape, the Indian National Congress has reportedly sidelined its long-standing ally, M.K. Stalin’s DMK, to back superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Driven by the singular objective of keeping the BJP away from the corridors of power in Tamil Nadu, the "Grand Old Party" appears ready to embrace a new era of Dravidian politics.
The Verdict: A Historic Shift
The assembly election results have delivered a seismic shift in Tamil Nadu's political geography. Emerging as the single largest party, the TVK secured a stunning 108 seats, falling just short of the 118-seat majority required in the 234-member Assembly. Meanwhile, the DMK-Congress alliance managed 73 seats, and the AIADMK-led coalition trailed with 52.
To bridge the gap, Vijay has proactively reached out to key members of the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), including the VCK, CPI, CPM, and the IUML. According to Election Commission data, Congress holds 5 seats, while the other four parties hold 2 seats each. If this bloc shifts its allegiance to the TVK, Vijay’s path to the Chief Minister's office is virtually guaranteed, ensuring a non-BJP government in the southern state.
Power Over Loyalty : The Logic of the Breakaway
The decision to abandon a "trusted friend" like Stalin was not made lightly. Congress and DMK share a storied history, with the DMK standing by the Congress during its most challenging national periods. However, internal friction had been simmering for years.
Local Congress leaders in Tamil Nadu have long voiced grievances over a perceived lack of respect within the SPA. Despite being in power together, Congress was denied a share in the state cabinet and sidelined in local municipalities and development boards. While a faction of the party—reportedly supported by Rahul Gandhi—favored an alliance with Vijay before the polls, organizational pressure delayed the move until now.
The "India Bloc" Strategy
A primary catalyst for this shift is the Congress high command's fear of the BJP. Party insiders suggest that if the Congress did not move quickly to bring Vijay into the INDIA Bloc fold, the BJP might have capitalized on the hung assembly to court the superstar.
Vijay reached out to us first, confirmed Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal. To ensure the BJP remains out of power, we have decided to extend our support to his leadership.
Sources indicate that in exchange for their 5 crucial seats, Congress is likely to demand two cabinet berths in the potential TVK government.
The DMK’s Response : "A Stab in the Back"
The DMK has reacted with visible indignation. A party spokesperson condemned the move, stating, "We have always stood by the Congress. This is a betrayal. Furthermore, Vijay has never openly challenged the BJP or criticized the Prime Minister. This alliance is fundamentally contradictory."
As the dust settles, the political map of the South is being redrawn. Whether this gamble pays off for the Congress or permanently fractures the secular front remains to be seen.
