Young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi is rapidly becoming one of the biggest talking points of the Indian Premier League (IPL). At just 15 years of age, the Rajasthan Royals batter has already started rewriting record books with his fearless batting approach.
Whenever legendary opener Chris Gayle walked onto the field with a bat in hand, records were expected to fall. From international cricket to the IPL, the “Universe Boss” dominated bowlers for years. Now, cricket fans are beginning to see a similar impact in Vaibhav’s explosive performances.
Chris Gayle Praises Young Star
Following Vaibhav’s latest power-packed innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chris Gayle openly praised the teenager on social media. Sharing Vaibhav’s match statistics, Gayle wrote, “A new six machine in IPL, brilliant Vaibhav.”
In another post, Gayle encouraged the youngster after he narrowly missed a century. “Unlucky, but one day you will get your hundred,” the former West Indies captain wrote.
During the match, Vaibhav smashed an incredible 12 sixes. With that knock, he became the first batter in IPL history to hit 10 or more sixes in three consecutive matches in a single season. Overall, he has now crossed the 10-six mark in four IPL matches.
Breaks Jayasuriya and Warner Records
Vaibhav Suryavanshi also surpassed a long-standing IPL powerplay record held by former Sri Lanka opener Sanath Jayasuriya. Back in 2008, Jayasuriya had smashed seven sixes during the powerplay in a match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Vaibhav has now gone past that achievement.
The teenage batter also overtook a major record of former Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner. Warner had scored 467 runs in IPL powerplays during the 2016 season, while Vaibhav has already accumulated 490 runs in the powerplay this season.
Joining Elite IPL Company
Vaibhav has now joined an elite list of players who scored 50 or more runs during the powerplay in IPL playoff matches. The list includes legendary names like Suresh Raina, who scored 87 against Punjab Kings in 2014, and Adam Gilchrist, who smashed 74 against Delhi Daredevils in 2009.
This was also Vaibhav’s fifth IPL half-century scored in less than 20 balls. Only Abhishek Sharma stands ahead of him in that category.
Youngest IPL Winner?
Rajasthan Royals are now just two matches away from lifting the IPL trophy. If the franchise goes on to win the title, Vaibhav Suryavanshi will become the youngest player in IPL history to win the tournament.
With his fearless batting, maturity under pressure and record-breaking consistency, the 15-year-old has already emerged as one of the brightest future stars of Indian cricket.
