KOLKATA : In a major boost to the employment landscape of rural Bengal, the newly formed state government has initiated the process to fill approximately 6,500 vacancies across the three-tier Panchayat system. This move aims to streamline administrative functions in Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zilla Parishads.

State Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh confirmed the development on Thursday, stating that the recruitment drive is essential to accelerate rural development. He highlighted that many departments are currently understaffed, with existing employees overstretched by the workload.

Focus on Transparency and Integrity

The West Bengal Panchayat recruitment will cover several key positions, including Executive Assistants, Nirman Sahayaks, Gram Panchayat Secretaries, Accounts Clerks, and Cashiers. Following the "Zero Tolerance" policy against corruption spearheaded by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the government is expected to maintain strict transparency in the hiring process.

"A list of 6,500 posts has been prepared. Currently, one employee is doing the work of four. I have apprised the Chief Minister of the situation, and we must clear this bottleneck to keep the wheels of development moving," said Minister Dilip Ghosh.

While the previous administration had launched the West Bengal Panchayat Recruitment Management Portal for online applications, the current government is reviewing whether to continue with the existing system or introduce a revamped, more secure framework to prevent any recruitment irregularities.

Maa Canteen Menu Upgrade: Fish-Rice at ₹5

In another significant announcement, Minister Dilip Ghosh addressed concerns regarding the Maa Canteen project. Dismissing rumors of its closure, he announced an upgrade to the social welfare scheme. In addition to the standard egg-meal, the government is planning to introduce fish-rice (Maach-Bhaat) for just ₹5 to ensure better nutrition for the underprivileged.

Political analysts suggest that these twin moves—massive government job creation and enhancing social security schemes—are strategic steps by the Suvendu Adhikari-led administration to consolidate its footing in rural Bengal while maintaining a clean image.

The District Level Selection Committees (DLSC) are expected to be restructured soon to begin the official notification process for the thousands of aspirants waiting for a stable career in the state's rural administration.
