Barkhola MLA Kishore Nath visited Jatinga river erosion hit areas, promising permanent anti-erosion measures and government relief to families.
BARKHOLA : The relentless and aggressive Jatinga river erosion has triggered severe anxiety in Assam's Barkhola constituency, threatening the displacement of over a hundred families. The continuous soil erosion has not only pushed several residential homes to the brink of collapse but also endangered critical state infrastructure, including government institutions, local temples, and a vital public water supply project.
Taking immediate stock of the unfolding crisis, the newly-elected Barkhola MLA Kishore Nath paid an extensive visit to the worst-hit areas on Monday. The legislator interacted directly with the distressed families, listening to their grievances, and assured them that the state administration would initiate immediate anti-erosion measures to prevent further loss of land and property.
Massive Jatinga River Bank Erosion Imperils Local Infrastructure
The intensifying fury of the Jatinga river has caused panic in areas adjacent to the Barkhola market, Dhumkar, and Naraincherra. Year after year, the shifting course of the river washes away fertile land, forcing local inhabitants to look for temporary shelter. The threat to public utility services has made the situation highly critical for the entire sub-division.
"The destruction caused by the Jatinga river is getting more severe every passing day. To find a permanent solution to this environmental crisis, I will personally hold high-level meetings with senior department officials and engineers. Our government is fully committed to standing by the vulnerable population," MLA Kishore Nath stated while addressing reporters at the site.
The legislator emphasized that while long-term master plans require budgetary approvals, his immediate focus is on executing temporary flood protection works. He promised to coordinate with the Assam Water Resources Department to start emergency geo-bag dumping and bamboo porcupine installations to arrest active bank erosion at vulnerable spots near the commercial hub.
Government Relief Promised to Displaced Families
Apart from engineering solutions, the MLA assured that the administration is preparing a comprehensive list of affected families to provide official financial assistance and rehabilitation benefits. The announcement brought a sense of relief to many villagers who have watched their ancestral land disappear into the riverbed overnight.
During this crucial field inspection, the legislator was accompanied by a high-level delegation of local leaders, including Barkhola BJP Mandal President Pinak Kanti Das, General Secretaries Ajit Das and Kalloljit Chakraborty, former Mandal President Arindam Nath, and senior party worker Amal Nath, among others. The team urged the block administration to keep a round-the-clock vigil on the rising water levels.
