Patharkandi Police distributed free helmets to helmetless bike riders in Karimganj, Assam, promoting road safety over traffic fines.
PATHARKANDI : In a heart-warming departure from conventional punitive measures, the Patharkandi Police in Assam’s Karimganj district launched a unique road safety awareness campaign on Monday. Rather than imposing hefty traffic fines on violators, law enforcement officials actively chose compassion over strict penalties by distributing free helmets to two-wheeler riders who were found traveling without adequate headgear.
The sudden and thoughtful initiative was carried out across major traffic intersections, specifically targeting the busy stretches of Patharkandi town and the Achimganj Tematha area. Top district officials, including Patharkandi Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anirban Sharma and Patharkandi Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (OC) Manasjyoti Boro, personally led the specialized traffic awareness drive alongside local police personnel.
A Move from Prosecution to Protection
The greater Patharkandi region and its adjoining suburbs have recently witnessed an alarming surge in motorists neglecting basic traffic rules, particularly riding motorbikes without wearing protective helmets. Expressing his concern over the rising incidents of road accidents, SDPO Anirban Sharma explained the psychological shift behind this unique public outreach strategy.
"We repeatedly urge bike riders to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and always wear protective headgear. In the past, we organized multiple awareness meetings and penalised violators with regulatory traffic fines. However, we noticed a persistent lack of awareness among a section of daily commuters who continue to compromise their personal safety," Sharma observed.
He further elaborated that the department decided to extend a gesture of care alongside traditional policing to change public behavior. "Since many citizens continue to neglect their own lives, we decided to extend a hand of love alongside routine enforcement. Today, we intercepted riders who forgot their helmets and gifted them new ones to secure their future journeys," the senior officer added.
Surprise Gifts Evoke Public Appreciation
The enforcement drive, which commenced on Monday afternoon, initially triggered the usual anxiety among defaulters. Spotting police checkpoints from a distance, several helmetless riders instinctively tried to turn their vehicles around to escape checking. However, instead of chasing them down or issuing challans, police personnel politely called them over, pacified their anxiety, and explained the critical importance of two-wheeler safety.
The unexpected gesture of receiving a brand-new helmet as a gift from the police left many motorists visibly moved and embarrassed by their own negligence. Overwhelmed by the positive reinforcement, the intercepted riders voluntarily pledged to never ride a two-wheeler without a helmet again. This empathetic approach by the Assam Police team has earned widespread appreciation from local residents, civil society groups, and community leaders alike.
A Firm Warning for Future Violations
While the initial phase of the drive focused entirely on transforming mindsets through compassion, senior officials maintained that the law would eventually take its course if the casual attitude persists. The local administration made it unequivocally clear that this humanitarian gesture was a final warning to the public.
The department warned that if two-wheeler operators continue to exhibit indifference toward traffic law compliance despite receiving free protective gear, the authorities will be compelled to implement much stricter legal actions, heavy financial penalties, and vehicle seizures in the coming days.
