Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Bengal Files' to finally release in West Bengal theatres on May 8. Distributor Satadeep Saha confirms state-wide release.
KOLKATA : In a significant turn of political and cinematic events, director Vivek Agnihotri’s controversial film, 'The Bengal Files', is all set for a grand theatrical release in West Bengal this Friday, May 8. The move comes just days after a massive political shift in the state, ending a period of "unofficial ban" and legal hurdles that had previously stalled the film's screening.
The film, which has been at the center of a political storm since 2025, faced stiff resistance from the previous administration, with allegations of it being "propaganda." Legal challenges were even mounted by the family of Gopal Chandra Mukhopadhyay, seeking a total ban. Actors like Saswata Chatterjee and Saurav Das also faced public scrutiny for their involvement in what critics termed a "strategy-driven" narrative.
Vivek Agnihotri Reflects on the Struggle
Following the recent election results, Vivek Agnihotri expressed his relief through a video message, recounting the hardships his team endured. "After The Kashmir Files, I was virtually persona non grata in Bengal. Our trailer launch was stopped, and I faced dozens of FIRs. We were even physically attacked," Agnihotri stated. He added, "I am glad we didn't give up. We want to take this film to every corner of Bengal, not just Kolkata."
The film is scheduled to be screened at the iconic Priya Cinema in South Kolkata. Arijit Dutta, the owner of Priya Cinema, shared his perspective with the media, saying, "A censor-approved film was kept away from the screens due to political diktats and authoritarianism. While the rest of India saw it, Bengal was deprived. I am extremely happy that the audience here will finally get the chance to watch it."
State-wide Distribution Underway
Renowned film distributor Satadeep Saha has taken up the responsibility of the film's state-wide release. He confirmed that a comprehensive list of cinema halls across West Bengal is being prepared to ensure maximum reach. "This is not just about Kolkata; the curiosity regarding The Bengal Files is immense in the districts as well," Saha noted.
As the state prepares for this high-profile Friday release, political analysts suggest that the screening of the film marks the beginning of a new era in Bengal's cultural and political landscape. For the viewers, it remains a long-awaited opportunity to judge the content for themselves, away from the shadows of censorship and controversy.
