The stretch in front of the historic Ramkrishna Vidyapith, which was adorned with "non-skid" tiles just months ago, is now in shambles, exposing the poor quality of construction and administrative apathy.
A ground-level inspection reveals a horrifying picture. Most of the colorful tiles have either cracked or completely displaced. In several spots, the heavy concrete slabs covering the drainage system have collapsed, leaving deep, dark pits wide open on a busy thoroughfare. "It is shocking to see how a project meant for public convenience has become a life-threatening trap within just sixty days," remarked a concerned local resident.
Safety of Students at High Risk
The location of this crumbling infrastructure is particularly sensitive. Being right in front of a major school, the Ramkrishna Vidyapith footpath witnesses a massive footfall of students and parents every morning and afternoon. With the drains now exposed and the walking surface uneven, the risk of a fatal accident is looming large. There have already been reports of pedestrians tripping over the loose tiles and narrowly escaping serious injuries.
Locals allege that the contractor firm carried out a "cosmetic" upliftment on a 20-year-old weak foundation without verifying its structural integrity. The use of substandard materials and a rushed completion process are being cited as the primary reasons behind this rapid deterioration. The lack of supervision by the PWD (Roads) and the Ramkrishnanagar Municipal Board has further aggravated the situation.
Public Demands Accountability and Urgent Repair
Despite the visible danger, the administration has maintained a stoic silence. No corrective measures have been initiated to fence the open pits or replace the broken slabs. The Ramkrishnanagar business community and conscious citizens have now demanded a high-level inquiry into the project's expenditure and construction quality. "If crores of public money are spent only to create 'death traps,' then who is responsible for this wastage?" questioned a local activist.
As the rainy season approaches, the fear of these open drains overflowing and causing more mishaps is growing. The people of Ramkrishnanagar are now looking for immediate action rather than hollow promises. Whether the Assam Government will hold the concerned officials and contractors accountable remains to be seen. For now, the students of Ramkrishna Vidyapith continue to walk on a thin line between 'development' and disaster.
