Silchar Food Grains Merchant Association urges Assam Govt to repair dilapidated NH-6 connecting Meghalaya. Bad road conditions hit essential supplies.
SILCHAR : Expressing grave concern over the deteriorating state of National Highway-6 (NH-6), the Silchar Food Grains Merchant Association has reached out to the Assam Government for urgent intervention. The association submitted a formal memorandum to the Chief Secretary of Assam, highlighting the deplorable road conditions from the Kalain point to the Meghalaya border.
This vital interstate highway serves as a lifeline for trade and movement between Assam and Meghalaya. However, the stretch has now turned into a nightmare for commuters. "The current state of the road is not just a logistical hurdle but a threat to public safety," stated a representative of the association, emphasizing that the road has become virtually unmotorable.
Severe Disruption to Essential Supplies
The Silchar Food Grains Merchant Association pointed out that massive potholes and a lack of proper drainage have led to frequent traffic snarls. During the monsoon, the situation worsens as the craters fill with water, making it impossible for heavy vehicles to navigate safely. This has directly impacted the transportation of essential commodities, leading to potential price hikes and supply chain disruptions in the region.
Daily commuters and emergency services are the worst hit. Frequent vehicle breakdowns and minor accidents have become a common sight on this NH-6 stretch. The merchant body noted that the economic stability of the area is at stake if the infrastructure maintenance is not addressed on a "war footing" basis.
Demand for War-Footing Restoration
The memorandum, signed by Sridham Paul, Joint Secretary of the Association, urged the authorities to issue immediate directives for the repair and maintenance of NH-6. The traders' body believes that timely action will not only ensure the safety of passengers but also stabilize the regional economy by facilitating smooth cargo movement.
The residents of Kalain and the surrounding business community are now looking toward the Assam Government with hope. "We expect the government to prioritize public interest and restore this crucial link before the situation turns catastrophic," the association added in its concluding remarks.
